Virtual Research Environments
These unique online research workspaces were developed by TLRP in partnership with the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies (CARET) in Cambridge, following JISC funding of Norman, Carmichael and Pollard.
The use of VREs was then trialed by TLRP groups and projects and went through a series of developmental upgrades.
The resource was made available to support the development of AERS and became particularly important to its networks on Learners, Learning and Teaching.
VRE facilities were also provided to the emergent World Education Research Association for use as an international repository and communication system.
In 2008, ESRC funded a new project, SPNECRE to explore how the VRE might be used to support academic networks more broadly, with particular reference to early career researchers. A report on this is available here.
In 2009, as part of TLRP’s sustainability strategy, the whole VRE facility was transferred to BERA to support the association and its special interest groups.
