The primary aim of TLRP-TEL research is to improve the quality of formal and informal learning, and to extend its reach – to make accessible forms of knowledge that were simply inaccessible before. This is a challenging aim, and the evolution of TEL research internationally illustrates how difficult it is to translate findings into practice, and to overcome the inertia of educational systems and communities.
Yet the demand for both quantity and quality of education has never been greater. Formal and informal educational communities are recognising the importance of supporting individuals in developing the capability to produce their own knowledge, and to develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, synthesis, collaboration, knowledge negotiation, evaluation, communication. Technology, suitably designed and deployed, can help to achieve this ambitious objective.
This is TLRP-TEL’s key challenge. As Director of this phase of TLRP’s work, and with the support of research colleagues and partner organisations, I look forward with relish to the development of TLRP-TEL through to 2012.
