This one-day workshop covered topics relating to research questions in order to provide a forum for the discussion of issues in this area. The workshop was primarily aimed at New Career Researchers but was open to all interested parties. This event was co-hosted by Peter Kutnick (University of Brighton) and Fiona Leach (University of Sussex) and held at the School of Education, University of Brighton. This was a two-day workshop held at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow). The workshop was aimed primarily at mid-career and experienced researchers interested in applying for funding under the ESRC programme and centre themes. The workshop was led by Professor Andrew Pollard (University of Cambridge) and Professor Teresa Rees (Cardiff University). This included presentations structured around the themes: Developing ESRC programme and centre bids ; The role of the ESRC Priorities Board; A case study of a successful programme bid; and The role of the Research Grant Funding Board. Use and application of Atlas.ti qualitative software, University of Leeds
This was a one-day training workshop held at the University of Leeds. The workshop involved a practical introduction to ATLAS.ti software and allowed participants to develop an understanding of the package. ATLAS.ti is a powerful software package for the visual qualitative analysis of large bodies of textual, graphical and audio or video data. For more information about this event please click here.

05/07/03 Deadline for applications for RCBN Small Capacity Building Grants Scheme
The TLRP Research Capacity Building Network (RCBN) invited individuals/organisations to apply for a small capacity-building grant of up to £3,000. These grants are to provide activities that have the principal aim of building research capacity into teaching and learning in the UK. This invitation was open to all educational researchers, including currently funded research projects and individual researchers. Action Research Conference, Cardiff University Hall Conference centre
The conference was hosted by The Centre for Research in Health and Human Services (Cardiff University School of Social Sciences) in association with the Health and Social Care Research Support Unit and the ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme, Research Capacity Building Network. The conference drew together people holding a variety of perspectives, and working in a range of settings and traditions. It aimed to build an active dialogue between key stakeholders, and inform contemporary discussion about how to facilitate good action research in health, education, social care, criminal justice and other fields. Introduction to QSR NVivo software for qualitative analysis, Newcastle University Ann Lewins presented an initial overview of the main highlights and longer term usage of QSR NVivo, a software package designed to assist researchers in the management and analysis
of qualitative data. This was an introductory course to the basic features of the package. The training included practical, computer-based sessions in addition to seminars and covered: coding, exploring, searching and organising data; memoing; and visual display of data connections.

Introduction to Complex Project Management, London
This workshop introduced the basic concepts of project management, explored the issues particularly relevant to engaging in (teaching and learning) research project management, and pointed people in the direction of software they might wish to use in managing their research projects. The workshop was jointly conducted by David Parsons, who is a specialist project management trainer (largely for business, but also for academic researchers) and members of the RCB Network (particularly Prof Gareth Rees and Dr Laurence Moore, both of whom have extensive experience of managing research projects).
