BERA/RCBN Master-Classes for Autumn 2004 The
Multimodal Analysis of Classroom Interaction Video Data Convenor:

This Masterclass is intended for all researchers interested in developing new and more comprehensive ways of analysing classroom interaction. Its aim is to show the ways in which analysis of modes of communication additional to spoken and written language contribute to understanding processes of meaning-making within the classroom. It will examine the ways in which teaching and learning are carried out through the interaction of gesture, posture, gaze, etc, as well as the way in which the classroom context itself (layout, wall displays, etc) contribute to the construction both of curriculum subjects and the subjectivity of learners and teachers. Some of the issues to be considered include: In what ways can a multimodal analysis add to understanding of what is happening in interaction in formal and informal learning and teaching contexts? Is it possible to be systematic in making multimodal observations? How can we best present complex multimodal data in reporting on research? Can we justify making connections from the micro of multimodal classroom interaction data to macro historical and social contexts and trends? Is it possible to ‘read off’ a change in policy, for example, from a multimodal analysis of classroom practice? This Masterclass is funded by the ESRC RCBN/BERA. It is a requirement for funding that these sessions are video-recorded for possible use by the ESRC for further training purposes. In applying for a place at the Masterclass, it is understood that you will be giving your permission for your participation to be recorded. There is no charge for attendance. However places are limited and enquiries and applications should be made as soon as possible, and no later than September 30th, to: The
